Message Microsoft made serious tradeoffs to enable this OS to work on touch devices. The problem is that 90+% of Microsoft's installed userbase is conventional desktops/laptops. This touch enabled GUI with large buttons does not work well on a keyboard/mouse setup with a large, high resolution screen.

Menus display information more efficiently and in a more orderly fashion than groups of icons (which is what the new Start screen is). Microsoft focused more on fashion and less on usability. The Start Menu was superior to the start screen from a usability point of view. It wouldn't work well with touch, though.

I bought Windows 8 because it was cheap and I tried using it. It was horrible. But with Start8 installed it's very nice.

Microsoft should have given users the option of installing the OS in either a classic or touch mode. This would have alleviated all of the complaints. But Microsoft's real goal wasn't to satisfy everyone, their goal was to indoctrinate them into the Metro UI and make it more likely that they'd buy Microsoft phones and tablets in the future. Instead of catering to consumer demand they instead tried to corral customers in a more profitable direction. That failed.

I like change if it's positive change. I don't like it if it's a negative change. Windows 8 was change in the wrong direction.
